INSTRUCTION

LECTURE

AdTypo_5_PerceptionAnd Organisation

Perception is "the way in which something is regarded, understood or interpreted".

Perception in typography deals with the visual navigation and interpretation of the reader via contrast.

Fig 1.1 Typography to create contrast

Dair posits 7 kinds of contrast

1.Size

A contrast of size provides a point to which the reader's attention is drawn. For example if you have a big letter and a small letter you will obviously see the big letter first before the small.

Fig 1.2 Contrast of size

2.Weight

Weight describes how bold type can stand out in the middle of lighter type of the same style. Other than then using bold, using rules, spot, squares is also provide a "heavy area" for a powerful point of visual attraction or emphasis.

Fig 1.3 Contrast of weight

3.Contrast of form

Contrast of form is the distinction between a capital letter and its lowercase equivalent, or a roman letter and its italic variant, condensed and expanded versions of typeface are also included under the contrast of form.

Fig 1.4 Contrast of form

4.Contrast of structure

Structure means the different letterforms of different kinds of typefaces

Fig 1.5 Contrast of Structure

5.Contrast of texture

By putting together the contrasts of size, weight, form and structure and applying them to a block of text on a page, you come to the contrast of texture.

Fig 1.6 Contrast of texture

6.Contrast of colour

The use of colour is suggested that a second colour is often less emphatic in values than plain black on white.

Fig 1.7 Contrast of colour

7.Contrast of direction

Contrast of direction is the opposition between vertical and horizontal, and the angles in between.

Fig 1.8 Contrast of direction

Task 3 : Type Exploration and Application

Develop a font that is intended to solve a larger problem or meant to be part of a solution in the area of your interest be it graphic design, animation, new media or entertainment design or any other related area not necessarily reflecting your specialisation.

or

Explore the use of typeface in your area of interest, understand its existing relationship, identify areas that could be improved upon, explore possible solutions or combinations that may add value to the existing typeface.

Proposal

Fig 2. Proposal ppt, week 10 (30/5/2022)

At first, I was not particularly satisfied with the three proposals I put forward. My initial idea was to implement the idea“shadow font "of the first proposal. However, after thinking and research, I found that the workload of this design was quite heavy, because I needed a lot of paper cards and materials to complete it, and the time was limited, and it was a personal assignment, so I finally gave up the idea.

Then I continued to look for inspiration in Pinterest. I found a font similar to moire, and then combined with a line of paper, the font can be changed in action.

Fig 4. Inspiration from Pinterest, week 10 (30/5/2022)

I chose idea 4 to continue to extend and make it. I continue to look for inspiration on Pinterest. Fig 4 is a few idea I found on Pinterest, which helps me design fonts later.

Digitisation & Exploration

Fig 5. Process in AI, week 11 (8/6/2022)

This is all the fonts I made in AI, each of which is made by their own special actions. After adding black lines, move the line layer and they will become vivid letters.

Fig 6. Different shapes and patterns of each letter to create movement
, week 11 (8/6/2022)

The figure above shows several different shapes and designs of each letter (the letters U V and Z in the picture). I use these four different shapes so that they can produce shape changes after adding lines, thus creating the effect that letters will move.

Fig 7. The one on the left is reference of the new font on the right hand side, week 11 (8/6/2022)

I used Gill Sans the UltraBold as the reference font, and then based on it, I designed four different gradient shapes for each letter, so that it presented a novel and designed letter.

Make GIF

I made the letters into moving pictures, and I wanted to show this feature that my font can produce movement through the movement of lines in this way, so I had the following test GIFs.

Fig 9. Letter B - GIF, week 12 (14/6/2022)

Fig 10. Letter C - GIF, week 12 (14/6/2022)

Fig 11. Letter D - GIF, week 12 (14/6/2022)

Fig 12.1 Letter E - GIF, week 12 (14/6/2022)

This is the dynamic effect of several fonts I tried and made them into GIFs.

Application

  Poster

Fig 12.2 Final "Moire Font" type display poster

Fig 13. Create the x-ray colour illusion in PS, week 12 (15/6/2022)

Fig 14. Poster 1.1 - jpeg, week 12 (15/6/2022)

Fig 15. Poster 1.2 - jpeg, week 12 (15/6/2022)

These two posters are the fonts that I thought would match my design, so I made an effect like x-ray illusion, and then put my designed fonts on them. I think the effect of this type is consistent with my font, so the presented effect is satisfactory. The background picture didn't steal the limelight of the font, but supported the atmosphere.

Fig 16. Poster 2 - jpeg, week 12 (15/6/2022)

Fig 17. Poster 3 - jpeg, week 12 (15/6/2022)

The whole poster has only an oversized X in the middle, which is simple and not monotonous. I took out the letter X from the font I designed, and then you can see in the good news that it is made up of two different font collages, Futura and Moire Font (designed by me). I want to combine a more formal font with one with a strong sense of design, so as to have a different visual experience.

Video 2. Introductory film without sound effect, week 13 (22/6/2022)

Video 3. Introductory film with sound effect, week 13 (22/6/2022)

I made this film to show and introduce that fonts will have different effects when they are static and dynamic, so as to attract viewers to download this font. As a part of this application, it makes him not only a static poster, but also a shock brought by dynamic fonts.

Final Submission

FEEDBACK

Week 10

Specific feedback: Idea 1 maybe can do something like "wayang kulit" to make it more interesting.

Week 11

-(Agong's birthday)Public Holiday-

Week 12

General feedback: It is very necessary to think carefully of your application as it is the important method to showcase your font as well as gain extra points to the font you designed.

Specific feedback: The idea is interesting. You can make the gifs part as a subtitle artwork, no need to just choose either the font or the animated gifs as your final submission.

Week 13

Specific feedback: The animated poster have too many elements that Interfere with the presentation of the font you design. The short film is good to go, you can try to make more something like in your film.

REFLECTION

Experience

This project is a different attempt for me. Because adobe app was used to make some drawings and basic operations in the past, this time it will be slightly different from the past, which is a very special attempt. At first, it was quite disturbing, because I didn't have any more ideas in the first three proposal, but after looking for more information, I found the "moire" interesting and tried to make this font. I feel really happy when I find my own satisfactory design. Although it takes a long time and energy to make, it is also fun and exciting in the process.

Observation

This assignment of designing fonts, from typography to advanced typography, has done three times about designing fonts. I feel that I'm making progress every time, and I'm more familiar with and familiar with designing fonts every time. At the same time, I'm trying to innovate and change constantly, and I want to create better and more special fonts.

Finding

I think I have learned a lot of knowledge from the research stage, and I have also developed some design thinking, so I can still design in this way. I found it interesting to observe other designers' designs and then try to understand thier thinking.

Fig . Coexist by  @wnzldnl

It's like a corrosive font, which looks very design and ornamental. There is an avant-garde and mysterious and terrible feeling. His letters are alternately arranged into a set of words by negative space and positive space, which looks very interesting and not boring.

It's a motion font, which creates this vivid effect by multiple small balls colliding and then bouncing. It's very rhythmic and very eye-catching.
