INSTRUCTION

Project 1

Task to do
- find an app to redesign
- research it's competitor
- make C.H.O statements
- make S.W.O.T analysis
- make at least 2 user persona
- create sketches
- create wireframe

App for redesign

At first, I found three different types of apps, namely Educational app, whether app and culinary app. In these three categories, I found out some applications with poor UIUX design that I saw in these categories and made a comparison between their pros and cons and screenshots of some pages, which can be seen in miro board in detail.

In the end, I chose culinary app as my app that the project will redesign this semester. The name of this app is PetitChef.

Competitor analysis

1. Tasty

Pros

+ Layout quit simple and easy to operate

+ Asking user preference at the first time they login, such as carnivore or vegetarian?

+ Have nice picture of food, all looks very 😋

+ The loading doughnut picture is quit cute

+ call to action button is strong and easy to find

+ less button, easy to use for new user or who is not familiar with technology

+ video of recipe is quit clear and qualitative

+ The advertisement of this app is quit good, I had saw this app advertisement in many social platform such as facebook and instagram. It attracts people to watch it until the end of the video

Cons
— Related Recipes section can put at the bottom of the page, since putting at the middle of the page will distract user when looking the recipe they have already chosen

2. BigOven

Pros

+ Functions are complete and quit good such as grocery list

+ Have an interesting function - meal planner

+ Can write note after viewing a recipe to mark out something to benefit yourself

Cons

— Have so many additional functions make the layout of the app a bit messy and complicated

— Not user friendly to the middle-aged women who are not familiar with the operation of technology

— Looks like too many words caz all the texts are crowded

— The recipes part separate into too many pages. One page is enough to insert ingredients, preparation stuff. Let user scroll from the top to the end is more user friendly for me since they is not too much information to show

— Have to pay for some functions 😢

3. Kitchen Story

Pros

+ The main page design is quit clean and beautiful

+ The colour and shooting style of the photos are the same, and the overall look is unified and advanced.

+ Have many professional chef sharing their recipes

+ Having descriptions for every dishes make all the dishes look more meaningful

+ Clearly mention the difficulty of the dish

+ Have timer ready in the step section, user only have to click the time that highlighted in blue colour can control the timer. It is quit convenient to user!

Cons
— So far, I haven't found any flaws and weakness

I made a new layouts adjustment for the original app, thus making all functions and layouts more concise and unified. I put several important functions at the bottom, so that users can look for the functions they need in a block, instead of a chaotic mess to find the functions they want. In addition, I added a function that can create and share their recipes into the application, which can increase the connection between users and applications and enhance the sense of interaction between them.

FEEDBACK

Week 3
The app you find to redesign it have potential to become a better layout, keep working on it.

Week 4
The function "cook with what you have" is difficult to do since they are many possibilities so it is not easy to make out. Maybe you can try to do the function that user can share their own recipe in the app, it will be a interesting and useful function.

REFLECTION

I think there is a lot of work done in the early stage of this project, so I have to investigate, study and analyze it. This will help me better understand the steps to design an app and how they actually implement it. I think it will be helpful for future work in this field, and I can design an application with more confidence and direction. I think the most difficult thing for me at this stage is to sketch out my revis version of the application for the original app, because it is necessary not only to retain some functions in the original application, but also to effectively improve the aesthetic feeling and practicality.
