Task 2: Design Expansion

INSTRUCTION

Task 2

We are required to expand the design developed for the competition by emerging the context with creative technology to express "playfulness" at the heart of the experience.

Fig. Final submission for Task 1

I made a parallel website for this task, showing the whole process of whale fall in stages. Make this website a popular science website. I applied my elements in Task 1 to my website design.

Whale fall mainly goes through three stages.
  • Phase 1: the mobile scavenger
  • Phase 2: the enrichment opportunist stage, a swarm of invertebrates moves in
  • Phase 3: the sulphophlic stage, the bacteria feed on lipids

Project Expansion Rationale

Interactive action
  1. drag
  2. click
  3. hovering

Fig. Home illustration

This is the state of the whale on the sea before it sinks to the bottom of the sea after death. Seagulls stay on the whale's body and sunset. Sunset is near dusk, indicating the end of the day, just like the whale's life has come to an end, but it is as vital as the sun and can bring hope to other life.

Fig. Phase 1 illustration

The first stage is that when a whale dies, it will be eaten by fish, sharks and so on. In this part, I try to make it less explicit and cruel, but it doesn't express the relevant meaning.

Fig. Phase 2 illustration

The second stage is the further decomposition of the whale's body, so what is left at this stage is more bone parts. So I turned the whale's body into a translucent form, and then showed the bone part.

Fig. Phase 3 illustration

In the third phase, I try to make a warm and less realistic picture, so that the process of death can be presented with a more harmonious and peaceful feeling. The inspiration comes from the colors in Coco movies.

Just for fun

I apply some effects to my artwork to make it have a different feel and style. I think this is a good attempt to present two different effects with the same work. I think this is an unexpected gain.

FEEDBACK

Week 10
Can combine the two ideas of parallel website and the idea that put the whale into an aquarium, making the idea process of whale death more vivid and warm.

Week 12
The illustration of phase 3 can turn the direction of whale head, so when it falls to the bone will look more sense.

REFLECTION

Task 2 is more difficult for me in the conceptual part. Finally, I decided to make an educational parallel website. Then I started to make some simple GIFs to make the whole website more vivid and interesting. I think the final result is what I want, but there is still a lot of room for improvement, and more details and small surprises can be added. Task 2 time is limited this time. During this period, I try my best to balance the time of each subject and ensure that each one can be completed on time.
