INSTRUCTION

Final Project : Stop Motion

We are required to produce stop motion video/ Visual Effects Video by a given theme. Voice over, sound effects and music can be used, to tell a compelling story. Confine to no more than 2 characters/ locations and only 1 event in less than 15 shots.

Final video is to be submitted in digital format:
- Screen Resolution 1080p(Full HD), 16:9(Wide Screen)
- Frame Rate 24/25fps
- Field Option Progressive Scan
- Audio Quality 48kHZ, 16-bits stereo
- Compression H.264

I end up choosing stop motion. It's mainly because I'm interested in this, and I haven't tried this form to present works of art before. This production process also makes me feel very interesting, although there may be many things that need to be prepared in advance and it is more complicated. I can try to challenge myself and explore new aspect of artwork presentation.

Idea exploration

Start Up

Video 1."Lost & Found", Oscar Shortlisted Stop-Motion Animation

I think the structure of the story is very good, and the framing are worth learning from. It can make the viewers have strong empathy with it. I think the narrative of this story is great and meaningful, and it is a warm short film.

Video 2. Stop-Motion Animated Short Film "Archie"

I like its lighting and effect. The sad protagonist is matched with dim and low saturation lights, while the happy protagonist is bright and full of vitality. Its effects music is also very harmonious and suitable for this video, and different background music reflects the mood of the scene.

Shooting Practice

Video . testing shoot in class

We spent a class time, divided into groups in Mr Martin's class, and then took a stop motion for about ten seconds as an exercise according to the materials and stories that Mr Martin gave us. Through this exercise, I feel that I have gained a new understanding of the shooting technique and process of stop motion in general, and made a good start for shooting stop motion myself later.

Define the theme
warm and healing story --> fable

I originally wanted to make a healing story, but when the whole storyboard came out, I tried to shoot it, but the effect was not good (you can see the finished product of my original story in the video 1,)

Story Outline

This is a story about little monsters living in the sky. His daily job is to make the world in the sky clean and beautiful by magic. Its special magic is to make everything he touches turn into the colour same as his body colour. He is waiting for his other companion to come to work. When they were together, the colour would turn purple. They go to work together by jet.

Final Story Outline

There is a big green monster living in the sky. One day, it met a small orange monster with magic, and then it threatened the little monster to use its magic to turn the white flowers in the sky into colours for him. Suddenly it was hungry, and wanted the little monster to conjure up some food for it. I ended up eating myself to death because it was too full.

FEEDBACK

Week 10

There are too many story lines, and the story structure is good, but it is good to choose one of these two events to extend.

Week 11

The two characters turn purple after high-five, which may not be understood by the audience. It can be changed to colour after high-five, which is more in line with imagination. Then one of them can build half of the bridge, and then go to the middle. It will be more interesting for two monsters to high-five in the middle and become colourful.

REFLECTION

I originally chose stop motion because I had never tried to shoot stop motion and wanted to take this opportunity to try it again, and then I prefer to shoot this animation over visual effect. But I didn't know how tired it was to shoot stop motion alone until after the shooting. Maybe at first, I thought it was too idealistic, and it was difficult to design things, because the production of equipment and materials was not as professional as a professional team, so it would be more difficult for one person to operate it. Plus, it's my first time to try to make stop motion, so I think at first I thought it was too simple and took myself too seriously. In the later process, because I bought the wrong clay at the beginning, bought soft clay, and then put it for a long time, the kind that will set, which led me to buy another batch later, wasting some time. Another problem is that my friend and I wrote an email to the school in advance to borrow the camera and studio for shooting, but when we arrived at studio on the same day, we found that the camera had been borrowed, which led us to contact our classmates who had the camera to pick us up. The whole shooting process had exhausted me before it started.

The overall experience is good. I finished my work for the first time, and then edited it myself. Although the final product doesn't have the very textured picture I imagined, I think it still passed for a beginner. In the future, I hope to shoot in the form of a team. I think a few more people will make the texture and effect of the whole stop motion finished product better and more complete.
