Quick Links
Week 11
Mr Vinod checked our B&W sticker design. He also told us some detail we need to pay attention when designing the sticker. His advices were written in the feedback section at the bottom of this blog.
Week 12
Mr Vinod mentioned the submission detail to us such as the size of the sticker and gif, looping gif design for 3 seconds. He check our work one by one and gave us feedback.

Task 3B : Type Design & Communication
We are instructed to design a 512px x 512px telegram sticker and gif for
this task. I'm going to make a Halloween sticker because Halloween is approaching.
1. Creating Telegram Sticker
Fig 1. Initial design sketches in AI, week 11(1/11/2021)
typeface : Bembo Std Regular
Finally, I came out with two initial idea of my sticker pack. The one
at the left is more inclined to create a horrible atmosphere, through the dark
background and some light effects. The one at the right, which is more adorable energetic.
After completing the preliminary draft, we will enter the part of colouring, modification and optimisation.
Fig 2. Various design in the stickers, week 12(9/11/2021)
My idea is to embody my design in the text or simply transform the prototype of text to make the whole look less monotonous and have a little sense of design. For example, change the middle horizontal lines of letter "e" into the tongue, add eyes and turn it into little monster. In addition, let letter "p" flip horizontal, after that add two eyes, and it becomes Frankenstein!
Fig 3. Four coloured versions of stickers design, week 12(9/11/2021)
Typeface: Univers LT Std 67 bold condensed, letter E&P: Bembo Std Regular
I came out with four coloured versions. Three of them are designed with some minor changes in layout, position and colour. The fourth one is according feedback from Mr Vinod last week which was using the Frankenstein head to be the main object.
Fig 4. B&W version, week 12(9/11/2021)
The one at the right is using colouring tool to colour it. The one at
the left is reducing the saturation to make it looks without colour.
Fig 5. Modification of outline, week 12(13/11/2021)
The initial outline is a bit destructive. So I tried three transformations and finally came up with a neat and uniform border.
Fig 6. Modification of spider web, week 12(13/11/2021)
Due to my initial spider web stroke being too close to each other, and when display in telegram, it will be hard to see. So I try to widen the space between the spider web stroke to make it visible in the telegram sticker.
Fig 7. Combination of idea, week 12(13/11/2021)
Finally, I combined the idea of my existing idea I had done in fig above. I
use the text design of the top right "Halloween" and combined it with the top
left gradient frame. I also make the outline of the text more neat and simply
draw it according the outline of text.

Fig 9. Final outcome version #2, week 12(13/11/2021)
2. Animate sticker
Fig 10. Use of puppet tool, week 12(14/11/2021)
I animate the tongue of the monster using Puppet Tool to make it look
like it is moving its tongue.
Fig 11. Adding keyframe for rolling eyes ball, week 12(14/11/2021)
I turn Frankenstein's eyes clockwise. I used keyframes to set where his eyeballs were going at a certain distance and then finished the animation.
Problem I met when exporting the sticker as a gif
Fig 12. First attempt of exporting as a gif, week 12(14/11/2021)
When I first exported the gif, the gif doesn't loop. So I go to youtube and check out was it the wrong step or choosing wrong option.
Fig 13. Export as transparent background step 1, week 12(14/11/2021)
Fig 14. Export as transparent background step 2, week 12(14/11/2021)
The wrong export have a white background because I export the format as quick time. After watchong video from youtube, i know that have to change the format to PNG Sequence. Furthermore, dont forget to selevt the channel as RGB+Alpha. After export the png file from AE. Wee need to open PS and open the png file we have done in AE. After that, it's the same as before to export it as a gif.

FEEDBACK
Week 11
General Feedback :Make the whole design match the square, occupy the whole square as much as possible.
Specific Feedback : The design of letter "e" is interesting. It would be more interesting if I put that fangs in other letters too. I can also take Frankenstein as the main subject, and other words surround him.
Week 12
General Feedback : Mr Vinod mentioned about the submission detail to make sure all of us submit it correctly.
Specific Feedback :
The outline of the sticker is not necessary be complex shape, just
make it simply cover the text. The gap of the spider web can be enlarged, because the sticker is very small, so it is easy for people to see that it is a spider web.
REFLECTION
Experience:
I think this project is the least restrictive in this semester of typography, and it is also the only homework that allows us to add colour. It's very interesting that we design our own stickers, and then we can really implement them on telegram. It's a great sense of accomplishment. I never thought that I would design a sticker and animate with AI and AE. This is also a good opportunity to apply the skills I learned in AI and AE this semester to this project.
Observation:
In the process of drafting, I found that a good design should make people interested in what you designed, and also make people remember your design. This is very challenging and difficult. Because everyone's aesthetics and attraction are different, it is not easy to design a special sticker that can be liked by everyone. Most of the festival should have an objective concept in everyone's mind, just like when it comes to birthdays, maybe everyone will think of cakes and gifts; When you think of Christmas, you will think of Santa Claus and Christmas trees. There will even be an objective colour, such as red for New Year and red and green for Christmas.
Finding:
I found that if a design wants to be outstanding, you must change in the traditional sense, that is, let people know what you want to express, and let people feel the particularity of your design, so that your design can speak for itself, rather than fully convey your design through explanation.
