Design Principle
Final Project : Visual Analysis

LECTURE

Visual Analysis
- Is a method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles.
- Inits strictest definition - a description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake.
- The purpose of visual analysis can also recognise the choices that a designer made in creating the design, as well as to better understand how the formal properties of a design communicate ideas, content, or meaning.

Visual analysis can include three phases
- Phase 1 :
Observation
Means closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design, trying to describe them carefully and accurately in your own words. Do not read beforehand about the design at all.

- Phase 2 :
Analysis
Requires to think about your observations and try to make statements about the work based on the evidence of your observation. Think about how the specific visual elements that you've identified combine together to create a whole, and what effect that whole has on the viewer. You can try to apply the design principles you have learned.

- Phase 3 :
Interpretation
In this final phase, your observations, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work (and in some cases the designer) and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources.

FINAL PROJECT

1. Visual Analysis

Fig 1. Poster for visual analysis

This is a poster of a drama which called "Biography of White Snake". Before starting to do the visual analysis, let's look up to this story.

The story behind the poster
“Biography of White Snake” is one of the “Four Folk Love Legends” in China, which prevailed in the Qing Dynasty and was created by Chinese folk collectives. It was said that there was a white snake, which was called Bai Suzhen(白素贞). She was willing to repay Xu Xian(许仙) for saving her life before 500 years ago. Then she descended to the world and married him, living together happily. But the Monk Fa Hai(法海), who was from the temple Jin Shan(金山), have been trying to kill Bai Suzhen so that they can't meet each other. What he did made them part and the couple had no chance to meet. It is a Chinese version of love story between man and goblinAt the bottom of the poster, there are scales of a white snake which implies the appearance of a person, is actually a snake.

Observation
This poster was created by Zhang Yu(张渔). "Biography of White Snake" describes a tortuous love story between a snake spirit and a human being. It expresses the people's admiration for the free love between men and women and their hatred for the unreasonable bondage of feudal forces. The poster was used very strong colour, but it has great oriental charm. With flaming red and mysterious blue as the base colour, it sets off the affectionate eye contact between the Xu Xian and the white snake, and a large texture arises spontaneously.

Analysis

Fig 2. Golden ratio

This poster uses the golden ratio to make the whole picture both dynamic and visual guidance. The layout of the poster is also very good, showing human and goblin in different ways, people walking on the ground and goblin in mid-air. All the backgrounds and foreground seem display randomly, but they are directional and coherent, which makes the whole poster have a strong movement.

Fig 3. Focal point of poster

The frame of this poster surrounds the two two main characters. This approach can arouse focal point and lead the audience's attention to the two protagonists. In addition, from the outside to the inside, it is deep to shallow, which invisibly makes the line of sight stay on the brighter focal pointDue to the blessing of the dark outline, the focal point is emphasised.

Fig 4. two perspective of poster

The picture on the left is from a human perspective, while the picture on the right is reversed and turned into a goblin perspective. Colour is used to highlight the character's personality, which white is very pure and simple. Blue represents some melancholy, wisdom, calmness and femininity. Blue also represents the spirit of never giving up, just like the love between Xu Xian and snake spirit.

Interpretation

Fig 5. Artist-Zhang Yu(张渔)

She born in 1988 and she is good at chinese ink painting. She combine oriental classical aesthetics with modern illustrations with unique style and exquisite painting skills, and the effect is amazing.

Fig 6. Her other painting

Her paintings have a strong dynamic and visual impact. At the same time, her brushwork is delicate, her colours are bold and no sense of disobedience.

The following is the opening film she made for movies and TV series. It contains a strong cultural heritage and the temperament of Chinese ink painting.

She carved the title design with the effect of meticulous ink painting and hand-painted oil painting. This classical rock painting tech accumulated layer by layer is the combination of ink painting and rock painting.

The Development of “Biography of White Snake”
"Biography of White Snake" is widely circulated in China. At first, it was spread orally. Later, it appeared in various forms, such as storytelling, and gradually evolved into a drama performance. Later, there were novels. After the Republic of China, there were operas, comics and other forms of interpretation. In recent years, there were also films made according to the legend of the white snake, modern dances arranged, new novels and so on. This story appeared in the late Qing Dynasty under the name of "Biography of White Snake", and there was no fixed name before. After nearly a thousand years' evolution, the story is constantly enriched, and the personality of the characters
 are also changing gradually.

Legend has it that at the end of the story, the white snake was finally imprisoned in this tower.

2. Design

Nirvana rebirth(涅槃重生 Chinese pronunciation:niè pán chóng shēng)is a Chinese word, which means that Phoenix has experienced the fire and painful test, gained rebirth, and achieved sublimation in rebirth. Also known as "Phoenix Nirvana". This allusion implies the persistent spirit of not being afraid of pain, no turning back, constantly pursuing and improving oneself.

Phoenix is a combination of reality and ideal birds, a symbol of blessing, exorcism and disaster relief, a symbol of the Chinese national spiritual concept and an embodiment of aesthetic forms.

Chinese people think that the Phoenix has the head of a wild goose, the buttocks of scales, the neck of a snake, the tail of a fish, the dragon pattern, the body of a turtle, the chin of a swallow and the mouth of a chicken. Its body shape is like a mandarin duck, its wings are like a bird, and its legs are like cranes. It is a kind of deity composed of many kinds of animals.

Legend of Nirvana Rebirth

In the legend of phoenix nirvana, the phoenix is the messenger of happiness in the world. Every five hundred years, it will bear all the unhappiness and hatred accumulated in the world, throw itself into the fire and set itself on fire, and exchange the end of life and beauty for the peace and happiness of the world. Similarly, they can only be reborn with a better body after the body has experienced great pain and tempering. This story and its metaphorical meaning are called "Nirvana" in Buddhist scriptures.

These are people who are struggling in pain, and the grey hand indicate helpless and afraid. They are like in the abyss, waiting for redemption.

Video 3. short clip of animation without text

After animated the poster, I think there was lack of something. So I decided to add music and also text to make it look more richer.

Final Video Outcome

Video 4. short clip of animation with text

The implication of this work
It symbolises the process of Phoenix jumping into the fire, and then being reborn. Take away all the pain, sadness and unhappiness of the world and bring happiness and happiness to the world. This is nirvana rebirth(涅槃重生). Phoenix Nirvana, a new lease of life! It shows that even in the face of adversity and difficulties, it is a process that makes us stronger and better. If you want to succeed, you must bear hardships, which is the price and the reason why success is precious. Life is like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Only when we shine in the ashes can we know that I can do it.
Application of Design Principle
Movement : The messenger's hair, Phoenix's flying wings and swinging tail are expressing the movement of the poster. They also drive the movement of whole poster.

Consistent : The direction of the whole poster is consistent with the direction of the character's eyes. In addition, the painting techniques and placement positions are balanced and unified.

Emphasis : The poster are emphasis the Phoenix and messenger which are in the centre of the poster.

Dynamic : The hair of messenger, Phoenix tail and wing look dynamic ,although they are reflected in the still poster.

FEEDBACK
General Feedback The poster analysed in visual analysis part can intercept the designer's design inspiration and the design principle used by them. When designing my own one, I can add my own features and styles without completely following the design style of the artist.

REFLECTION
I think this is a meaningful assignment for me. I think there are many histories and stories worth exploring and discovering in Chinese culture. I think these deities created by human beings have given many ordinary and powerless people energy, which is why people should have faith. Chinese culture is extensive and profound, and I also explore and understand it while looking for information, and put the profound and important meaning in my blog, hoping that more people can gain faith and hope in my works.     I hope I can build my works on the basis of meaning and stories. I hope my works are full of stories and emotions. The work I want to make is not for the sake of doing, but because there are thoughts or stories I want to express in this work. I think this is the value of a work. I hope I can constantly broaden my horizons and have more cultural connotations and knowledge, so as to create more valuable works.
