PROJECT 1

Self-portrait
Visual Research :
Fig 1. Visual research

For research part, I was looking inspiration in Pinterest and Google. I had found different styles of self-portrait as you can see above. Some of the artworks used colour to express author's innermost being. This type of self-portrait indicate their soul voices through the strong aggressiveness and visual impact. Besides, the artwork of Rene Magritte which is simple but feeling there has hides mystery. It looks peace also intriguing and conjecture.

Idea Exploration :
At the beginning, I start from a brainstorming so I can jotted down my personality and easier to thinking out the way to combine and express them. I noted down what I love to, my mental personality and the rebarbative personality I am not appreciate.

Fig 2. Brainstorming about me

From the above brainstorming, I intend to pick several characteristics to carry out my creation. I picked all of them except travelling and shopping, enjoy bustling and also stay alone.

I am a ambivert person. I am also a person who feels anxious and timid easily. Most of the time, I will be inclined to making people laugh because I like the atmosphere of happy and relaxed. When I have pressure or troubles, I prefer to stay alone and digest my emotions by myself. I don't want to bring my negative emotions to people love me. I believe that there is nothing that cannot be solved and difficulties that can't be overcome!

I wanted to let people know that don't judge me easily as you don't know anything. Don't look other people in only one side. My initial scene was me with my gun gesture pointing the viewer to indicate don't comment me randomly. I also decided to fill my background with the things I mention in the brainstorming. I decided to create a gif.

Fig 3. Rudiment sketches

I had sketched 4 background. The first sketch is the rudiment of me as I mention above, me with the gun gesture. 2&5 sketches are room perspective. 3&4 sketches are candy-land angle of view. After sketching both background, I choose one of the sketches of two different scenes, the shortlisted sketches are 4&5. After deliberation,I thought sketch #4 perspective is a bit weird. Finally, I choose sketch #5.

Fig 5. Line manuscript scene 2

I use photoshop to complete the two scenes and also animating them.

Fig 7. Comparison without tones and with tones

I put shade on the creases of the clothes to make it look hierarchical.

Fig 8. Revision of eyebrows

I changed the eyebrow shape to make expression look richer and more appropriate.

Fig 9. Creating gif in Photoshop

I used 21 frames to completed my final gif.

Fig 10.Producing gif in Photoshop

I put the scene 2 picture into the scene 1 eye to connecting both of the scenes.

Fig 11. One of the frame of my gif

I lower the opacity of the phone frame to make them connecting more smoothly

Seeing is not necessarily believing. Which one is real? Is it real in your eyes or in your mobile phone?

Concept
I try to interact with the viewer through my self-portrait. There is eyes contact between I and viewer, let the viewer feel stared at and oppressed. The viewer who is looking on my self-portrait also a part of my artwork. I animated the scenes to create an endless cycle and asking the viewer is the world true or false? Is it true in your eyes or in your mobile phone? There are too many things that are not necessarily  true, so do you think I am real in your eyes or I am in your mobile phone?

Detail Description :

Fig 15. Demons and fairy

Fig 16. Detail display

These three matchstick men are metaphors three situations of life which are keep going, fail, joy of success. The red is transformed into different objects in each matchstick man representing their stages, respectively are red kerchiefred eyeshade and red flag of victory. It is literally my common expression during my life. Full of fighting spirit and vigor while trying out something, I also feel falling and suffocating when facing barriers, feeling joy and satisfaction when success.

Fig 17. Photos I use in scene 1

Story of the photos
If you look carefully, you will see there are two photo at he background.
I choose two photos that are important and meaningful to me and put it into my self-portrait. The first photo is my family photo when I was 12 years old. We went to beach and watch the sunrise. My sisters and I were wearing pyjamas because the sunrise was too early and we were not awake yet. Even tired, but it was really a meaningful memory with my family. The second photo was took in China. On behalf of my secondary school, I attended the camp in China and served as the president. This photo is photo took when I am making an opening speech on the stage at the time. There were 8,000 people under the stage, and I was very nervous and excited.

FEEDBACK
Adopt special perspectives and expressions.

REFLECTION
Through this project, I can know more about myself and try to express myself through my work. It was a good experience which help me to improve my composition of my idea. There are so many way to present an artwork and I think we used to choose one unique way that perfectly match us and represent who I am. This is my first attempt drawing a digital drawing artwork as I usually use traditional hand drawing to complete my paint. It is a good try and I am satisfied with my first attempt. But it still have huge room to improve such as the uses of colour. I think it can be more interesting than what I done above. I will keep exploring it!

  1. Well done!! Made me think a lot and question what would I want to believe when I see parts of my life flash in a perspective! Good work here! Great way to apply sense of convergence, unity and harmony to evoke a thought provoking perspective!
