Task 2 : Typographic Exploration and Communication

Week 6

 Sketches on paper :

Fig 1. Initial sketches of the task, Week 6(27/9/2021)

Before executing my design in Indesign, I sketched my initial idea of headline & text composition on paper. The draft on paper was to facilitate me from inspiration review and more extension in the later period. I jotted down the overall style and layout of my idea.

Sketch #1 :
Fig 3. Three layouts of sketch #1, Week 6(27/9/2021)

Fig 4. Layouts blocked out, Week 6(27/9/2021)

For the first sketch, I came out with 3 layouts. I lower the bottom right corner opacity of 1 & 3 layouts so the reader will first see the upper left corner. For the second layout, it is a basic frame(without comparison of opacity) framing the text.

Sketch #2 :
Fig 5. Four layouts for the name list, Week 6(27/9/2021)

For the execution of sketch 2 shown in fig, I arranged the name-list part first because it was too long(33 person's name) and thin. The outcome will be a bit weird if it was typeset with ordinary text. So the figure above shows my progress and finally I used the fourth one to put in my layout. I also adjusted the kerning of the number so it won’t look too crowded.

________
Week 7

In week 6's class, Mr.Vinod reminded me that the headline design was using too many graphical elements and the ragging was weird and unsmooth. Below are my updates on new headline design and ragging.

- Change the typeface of the word "visual communicators" from Gill Sans Semibold into Univers LT Std 59 Ultra Condensed
- Adjust the lever of the opacity to make different details.

Modification of week 6's layout

Fig 21. Modify week 6's layout, Week 7(5/10/2021)

-Lower the opacity of the background design to let it looks brighter.
-Change the headline "UNITE" design by connecting the word instead of adding graphical shapes.

-Change the layout of the passage but it still retains some original design inspiration as you can see in the figure above.
-Change the headline "UNITE" design by connecting the word instead of adding graphical shapes.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
General Feedback : Gill Sans leading can be 2.5-3 because its x-height is higher.

Specific Feedback : Headline design was using too many graphical elements and the ragging was weird and unsmooth.

REFLECTION

Experience:
For task 2, I think it is more challenging to me compare to task1- exercise 2. This task is challenging our creativity under the condition of observing the rules and regulations. It's like completing the task with characteristics and also following rules.

Observation:
Through this task, I observed that before the final outcome, it needs a lot of exploration and constant attempts in InDesign. Especially for people like me who have just come into contact with typography, I can't know the quality of the finished outcome through only a draft. I need to digitalize the sketches before I can know exactly whether this design is working or not.

Finding:
I realized the flow and compose of the text and headline is really important because it will increase the readability of the passage also guide the viewer to look through your whole passage. A good passage will let readers be comfortable with the whole feeling and even in the reading process.

FURTHER READING

I have read the chapter : Typographic Principle of this book which is started from page 226-233.

Symmetry and Asymmetry
Fig 34.1 screenshot of the book- symmetry and asymmetry

-Matt Fangman's website for the University of Texas at Austin's library has distinct hierarchical levels of information, where typographic information and small photography balance a large photography above. This asymmetrical composition creates a sense of order and comfort for the viewer.

White Space
Fig 34.2 screenshot of the book- white space

-The almost-blank lower right side of this Crane Lettra swatch book compositionally balances out the more text-heavy left side(done in Trade Gothic). And the white strips of paper act as pull-tabs for designers and printers to tear and use during the specification process.
