Final Project : Final Output

We need to use what we explore in the first two projects and then design an original design according to the culture.

Final Output (Person in charge)
1. Three design items of the toxic series collection, makers:Tze, Dania, Cheryl, Metta
2. Logo design Jiayee (me)
3. Toxic Series Album Design Vernice & Jiayee (me)
4. Short film of products display Jiayee (me)

Purpose of this design
Our idea is to criticize the influence of this culture on a boy and a man. Masculinity is bound to be what a mature boy should show, but it is ridiculous to divide boys too much not to do so-called "girls things". We named this series "Toxic Series Collection". Our idea is to design a series of designs that violate ergonomics and ridiculous items that symbolize men, thus showing that this design is as unusable and ridiculous as the toxic masculinity culture. Let people realize that this old era needs to change, or it will be as illogical as these designs.

Logo Design

Fig 1. Logo Sketch

Fig 2. Two different colour schemes ,week 7(15/2/2022)

Fig 3. Logo Analysis diagram ,week 7(15/2/2022)

This is our logo specially designed for this series. At first glance, you can see a burning swordThe overall design also echoes our message ”Toxic Masculinity is a double-edged sword.

If you look closely, you can see thorns wrapped around the hilt, which shows that when a person partakes in toxic masculinity, he will also get hurt. The burning flame behind is a mixture of flames of two different colours. The bright green on the left symbolises the toxicity of this culture, inspired by radioactive toxic  material and the bright blue on the right is the colour that symbolises masculinity. Together, it is toxic masculinity

There is also a smiling demon hidden in the flame. On the left, the demon's face can be seen from the silhouette of the flame. This demon mainly expresses the evil and toxicity in toxic masculinity.

Outcome

Toxic Wineglass
Fig 7. Wineglass Sketch,week 2(12/2/2022)

Fig 8. Toxic Wineglass display,week 8(22/2/2022)

The stem and base of this wine glass is placed inside the glass and stems out from the opening of the glass. When user’s try to drink from it, the base is pushed into their face and may cause harm.

Toxic Mug

Fig 9. Mug Sketch,week 2(12/2/2022)

Fig 10. Toxic Mug display,week 8(22/2/2022)

The mug’s handle is placed at the bottom instead of the side like traditional mugs. This makes it so that user’s are unable to place the mug down without spilling what’s inside. The handle at the bottom also makes it difficult to drink with.

Toxic Teapot
Fig 11. Teapot Sketch,week 2(12/2/2022)

Fig 12. Toxic Teapot display,week 8(22/2/2022)

This teapot is made so that the handle and the spout is on the same side, putting the user’s hands and arm in an awkward and uncomfortable position when in use.

Toxic Series Design Album

 Album Showcase

 Toxic Series Design Album. pdf

The album aims to provide necessary information about the collection and the intended message we want to express to the audience so that everyone can experience the culture, its implications and the significance of the collection visually. The album integrates all our central ideas, design concepts and design achievements, and can also be regarded as the essence of our project.

Product display film

Video. Final Product display film

Film production is another medium that allows us to convey our information and design. This film is short, but it is hoped that through this film as a guide, the audience's curiosity will be aroused so that they can continue to explore the meaning of our designed items and the views expressed with curiosity. The video also serves as a visual aid for everyone to experience the items in our collection even without its physical presence.

FEEDBACK

Week 7
Specific feedback: Mr Vinod said that the design is good to go but take noted on one of the mug's handle that we made needed to find more reference to make it more accurate with the real mug. Besides that, find statement that support the purpose of the used on the box for presenting the artwork we made.

REFLECTION

Experience
This is what I think is the most interesting and challenging of the whole course. Because of the need for teamwork and full communication, everyone has their own ideas and opinions, so communication and discussion are particularly important. Team cooperation can enable us to accomplish many things quickly, but what is more challenging is how to achieve a balance when there are many people, and it will be difficult for everyone to agree.

Observation
I think I am very satisfied with the finished product this time, and also the album and the film because it conveys our idea about this toxic masculinity culture, which is also reflected in the work. The only pity is that when making these three containers, we haven't done a comprehensive study on the shapes of these containers, so the shapes of the finished products are not particularly perfect. For me, this small defect will be a small detail that I will pay attention to when I do other things next time, and it is also a detail that I have learned from this project, a detail that I have never thought of before.

Finding
Before making this project, I thought it was most important to choose a good theme (probably the more amazing, the more distinctive, the better), because a good theme can have more parts and details that can be extended. But later, I found that there are many cultures that are not popular or too common or even not surprising, so people don't pay attention to them deliberately. I found that as design students, we have the responsibility to try to bring things and ideas that ordinary people don't pay attention to into their vision. Modern people are busy with their own lives, and it's very easy to ignore many small details, which is why we need to design the details that we didn't notice in our lives and remind them. I think this may also be one of the missions of design.
