Project 2 : Data Collection

We required to collect visual, oral, texture and tactile artefacts that would be part of their research materials for the ideation in Project 1 (Proposal).

So to do that we use 3 types of data collection.

  1. Survey

  2. Observation, and lastly

  3. Academic reading

Google form questions

Toxic Masculinity Research and Data Collection :

The following is a fashion designer I happened to see when I was looking for information. Although it is not directly related to the research question I am in charge of, but I think it is also an interesting discovery. He was once influenced by the toxic masculinity culture, and he wanted to expose and raise more people's awareness of this bad custom through its brand.

Nigerian designer Adebayo Oke-Lawal is using fashion to challenge racial and gender stereotypes. Speaking to Dezeen, he says he wants his label Orange Culture to kickstart a global movement for diversity.

"I feel like people are afraid to talk about toxic masculinity because it makes them question who they are," he said.

"It is embedded in our society that men are supposed to do a specific thing," he continued. "These stereotypes have affected men in so many ways, generationally. It's a conversation we need to have."

He said how he had dreamed of being a fashion designer since he was a boy, but was pressured by his family into a more traditional career in finance. (Frearson,2019)

FEEDBACK

Week 4
General feedback: This week we present the progress of our project, Our idea of using toxic masculinity collection series is good, we will need to creatively think of the design and research for methods of clays for it at least make it like professional quality.

Specific feedback: Demonstrates a scholarly understanding of research methods in the rationale, very resourceful and has a very wide scope, yet focused. Well done. Evidence of brainstorming / idea exploration is implicit in the thinking and presentation and thus good and extensive. Very effective communication, very clearly stating and justifying the selected theme, concept & approach of the research, fully supported by relevant citations.

Week 5 Specific Feedback: Demonstrates good observational and research skills through the collection of various materials, using relevant tools. Documentation of collected materials is written clearly with effective written communication skills, clearly reviewing the contents of the sources. However, it would be good and a necessary practice to restate the RO & RQ along with the theme, and how the RO/RQ relate to the questionnaires used (interview/survey/Book). With that, your conclusion will state how the collected data answered the RQ and fulfilled the RO. It will also indicate implications for design output in-line with the theme when highlighting the result part of your conclusion.

REFLECTION

Experience
This step of data collection is a new attempt for me. In the past, I used to look for inspiration on the Internet and other creators' works to find inspiration and ideas. But this time, I want to learn about a culture and discover the story behind it, so as to design something from different angles and directions.

Observation
In the process of data collection, it is easy to find the answer that meets the research question, but it is not easy to integrate one's own speech from numerous papers and publications, and it is even more difficult to transform words into vivid and representative works. Try to feel and experience the environment personally, even though I am not in it.

Finding

I found that a distinctive and special design is not only to think about the thing itself, but also to explore the story behind it in depth and it will be a good way to come up with a different idea. The deeper you know, the more relevant the design is to the theme and the more complete the meaning I want to express.
