Project 2B -Poster Design
For project 2B, we are instructed to complete a poster design about the physical and mental impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on us. In order to get a deeper understanding of this subject, I collected some information on the Internet, which will help me understand better the situation and conceive the structure and slogan of my poster. Below is a summary I wrote after data collecting on the internet.

1. Research

Summary of my research:
During pandemic times, calling your doctor over a cough and sore throat may have seemed over-the-top. COVID-19 has flipped those norms entirely. Given all of the changes in our everyday routines, we might feel a little extra anxiety. Craig Sawchuk, PhD said "It's normal not to feel normal right now."Trevor Schraufnagel, PhD said "What are the precautions we need or want to take in a post-pandemic future? What will the new norm be?"

1. Is COVID-19 turning you into a hypochondriac?
Over worries about your health can turn into a problem themselves. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM-5), the American Psychiatric Association (APA) replaced the diagnosis of hypochondriasis(health anxiety) with 2 separate diagnoses: illness anxiety disorder and somatic symptoms disorder. Common obsessions of hypochondriac and illness anxiety disorder can include thinking a cough must be a sign of lung cancer, avoid certain objects, such as door handles, in case they are contaminated and etc. I think some people in this world, especially now, maybe feeling really sad but it doesn’t mean that it's going to go down a path that they can't get back from.

The study below aimed to measures the level of mental health of the Malaysian public approximately 2 months after the pandemic's onset. There were increased depressive, anxiety and stress symptoms throughout the study period, with the depression rates showing the greatest increase.
2. 'Coronasomnia'?
COVID_19 is wrecking our sleep and may cause the second pandemic of insomnia. Because of the pandemic and the stress, more people than ever are fighting a serious loss of sleep. "Insomnia was a problem before COVID-19. Now, from what we know anecdotally, the increase is enormous," said Angela Drake, a UC Davis Health clinical professor. "Once the master clock gets disrupted, everything else breaks down," said Kimberly Hardin.

Below is the research of sleep disorders during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic among Malaysian adults. An online survey was conducted from 11 January to May 2021.

3. Be estranged from each other/another layer of isolation
Having less human interaction has been the biggest change many have had to grow accustomed to amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Because two ways of spreading this epidemic are through mouth spray and physical contact. So with the aggravation of the epidemic, people can be said to be in a state of zero contact and this may also be a new normal in the next decade or so. We should try new interaction ways such as video calls, text messages and other new ways. People are very nervous and vulnerable to change it but hopeful that this could be a new start.

Fig . Reference #1, poster from Pinterest

This poster expresses the paranoid. If you just look at it roughly, you can only see an ear in the picture whereas if you look closely, you can see a person side face whispering there. This poster using the idea of gestalt as it changes the outline of the ear into a person side face. This poster also calls on the person who is suffering from paranoid can try to talk to someone else.

Fig . Reference #2, poster by Jenner Porter

This poster showed the depression of a person. From the headline, we can directly know what this poster talking about. The word "depression" is written in blue colour as it represents a blue mood. There is a button on the person's face indicating the control of emotions. The sub-title"you can't just turn it off" shown the helplessness of depressed people as they can't control their emotions by turning off the button. The whole poster indicated without colour also bring us into the monotony and constraint of the depressing world.

Fig .Reference #3, poster from Pinterest

This poster shows the normality of a depressed person. It is a strong contrast between the photo of the woman holding in her hand and her real emotion behind the colourful photo. We can see her real emotion is really in a bad mood but she still pretends she is happy. The slogan of the poster is positive and call on them to be happy.

2. Concept

Title: Mental problem during the COVID-19 pandemic

Slogans :
-"What will the new norm be ?"
-"Is it normal not to feel normal right now ?"
-"For not to be worried, I pretend I'm not"
-"This mask world also masking me"
-"Save Our Soul"
-"Coronavirus side effect"

Details :

-Don’t ignore it, it is not a shame.
-Most teenagers did not
realize it was perfectly normal to have such stages in life. Depression starts when one can’t adapt to the changes of life and they preferred to stay silent.

Fig . Poster #1

Concept
This poster shows the fact under teenagers‘ smiling faces. The cracked magnifier indicates we only can perceive teenagers' anxiety and depression due to pandemic through observation carefully and closely. The slogan "Save Our Soul" is to remind everyone to pay attention to teenager depression as teenagers also have a great chance of suffering from depression. The distress signal "SOS" hidden in the slogan reflects the help and encouragement the teenagers are eager for.

Explanation of process :

Fig . Making crushing effect

Fig . Process of cutting out the broken glass

To make it look more real, I crop the crack glass in Channels-"greencopy" and paste(command+j) it to my poster. It looks more like a part of the poster.

Fig . Process in Photoshop

The original photo's eye is westerner woman but the girl on my poster is an eastern girl. So I crop out the eastern girl's eye and paste it on the photo above to make it look like an eastern girl as well.

Poster #2

Fig . Poster #2

Concept
The design idea of this poster is to make people pay attention to adolescent depression through the visual expression of poster. I compare Covid-19 to a bullet, which is as powerful as a bullet and it hurts like a bullet through the heart. The lighting in the woman's heart position in the poster metaphorically shows the thunderstorm handover in their hearts.

Explanation of process :
Fig . Process in Photoshop

I use quick selection tool-select and mask to cut out the woman and her waving hair without a scratch. The figure above is step by step I did in Photoshop.

Poster #3

Fig . Poster #3

Concept
This poster concept is to reflects the isolation of relationships caused by COVID-19. The slogan "Coronavirus side effect" is to present the pandemic had affected us unconsciously as we didn't notice. We all know the physical impact of the epidemic, but we know nothing about its "side effect" of psychological impact. The girl in the corner is framing herself to isolate herself from the outside world. She also felt suffocated and collapsed in the cage, and she is in dilemma.

Explanation of process :

Fig . Changing colour of pill

I changing the colour of the pill as I think the original pill's colour doesn't match the expression I wanted. I reckon the red colour is more suitable for my poster so I use Hue/Saturation to change the colour.

Fig . Modification of shadow

There is light coming from the right side and I realised that the shadow for the slogan was wrong. So I change it to the left bottom side to make it sound logical.

Fig  .  Modification of shadow

The light source comes from the right side of the whole poster, so when the girl stands with her back to the light, there must be a shadow in front of her.

Feedback
Week 9 : Mr Martin said either one is good to submit.

Reflection
Before doing this project, my cognition was that it was as simple as collage pictures according to ideas. But when I started to do this project, I realised that it was very challenging which required my creativity and imagination to draft out the composition form I decide first, and then find the corresponding photos to be combined together. It is very challenging to find a photo that conforms to the idea, angle and direction. When choosing photos, I also need to accurately judge whether the expressions and emotions of people in this photo are in line with my theme, and what I can add to these photos to make them belong to me. I also learned to crop out things with different transparency and how to crop out details intact as I mentioned in my blog. On the whole, this is a great opportunity for me to explore my creativity and cropping skills in Photoshop.
