Exercise 2 : Balance & Emphasis / Repetition & Movement

Week 2 :

Today don't have any class because of the National Holiday. Mr Charles post the lecture on Microsoft team so we can learn from the video. To make sure I am definitely understand it , I went to website and my album, try to analyse if the pictures had follow the principles I had learnt.

Balance & Emphasis

Balance

        -Symmetrical Balance (like mirror image)

I use sketchbook to sketch a Christmas tree with a star both are in symmetrical balance

The Golden Ratio

Photos follow the rule of golden ratio

rule of thirds : composition guideline to create more dynamism to a work.

These were the pictures took before and I think these photos are also follow the rule of thirds.

Emphasis : To create dominance and focus in a design work.Various elements can be used such as colour, shapes or value, to achieve dominance.

Task 1 : Emphasis

Visual Research :

Fig 1. Visual Research of Emphasis

Idea Exploration :

My initial idea was make a colourful space in a black and white world. People  who live in black and white world are just repeat the same thing - work. One character are different from general people and enjoy in his/her own world which is colourful and playful.

Task 2 : Movement

Idea Exploration :

Attempt 1

Fig 6. Attempt of Doing "Movement"

I think this artwork (above, Fig 6) was a bit common and general. It was lack of interesting story and there was not central idea to express in this artwork. Therefore, I decided to change a way to express "movement".

Attempt 2

For this artwork, my inspiration was myself. During these day lockdown, I tried to step into kitchen and cooking for my family. But I am not familiar with this aspect, cooking as if to blow up the kitchen! Therefore, I think when I "busy" in cooking, it was also a movement, right ?

Feedback
General Feedback : Mr Charles said we can try something new and no need to be too safe when playing the rules of these exercise.

Reflection
I realised most of the time my first attempt was very general and lack of creativity. I almost not satisfied with that. I think I can improve my initial idea so when I execute it virtually it can work better.

Comments

  1. Very interesting explorative ideas! The kitchen is a very good and original concept! In terms of movement, consider the word "sequence" it can reflect a seguence of events to create a sense of motion. like one after the other. Playing is points of view, angles, perspective might help. What you have there is a great idea and a good starting point! Good effort!
